im a rising sophomore in college, majoring in finance. im trying to decide what classes to take next semester and beyond. would it make a difference to banks and recruiters if they see me pursue a sociology minor (20 units) or would it not be much different if i just took random electives instead?
i am already pursuing a chinese minor (though i am chinese). while the sociology minor classes all seem decently easy, im sure i could find many more easier classes at my school.
help would be much appreciated
Don't be a grade grubber and take the classes that you enjoy. If you enjoy sociology then do the minor. If you don't then don't. People don't like individuals that do things to "look good" or boost their gpa's, people like individuals that are interesting and passionate about the stuff they pursue.
What possible use could you have for a sociology minor? Chinese is actually valuable, but sociology is well known as a BS subject people take to boost their GPAs. Don't add a minor just look on ratemyprofessors.com, find the easiest teachers and take their classes instead of adding a completely useless minor.

My opinion could be biased, but I would actually think that electives would look better on a resume. The particular career (exotic trading, statistical arb, and most quantitative trading and research desks) I'm recruiting for is pretty quantitative, so anyone who's not a engineering/physics/math/economics major is looked down upon slightly for not being quantitative enough. (There's a mixed view on finance majors and sometimes even econ majors.)
Of course I have no idea what you plan to go into, but it would seem that a sociology major makes it seem like most of your free electives were BS classes. If you just had electives, it wouldn't be so obvious.
A sociology minor is literally not going to impress a single person who will interview you for IBD. Just take classes you like.
