Small Boutiques in Australia
I was wondering if anyone out there who is well across the range of players in the Australian IB market could shine some light on some of the less talked about shops?
In terms of getting transaction experience, does anyone know how reputable any of these are? - Azure Capital - Allier Capital - Highbury Partners - Stanton Road Partners - Record Point - ICA Partners - Blackpeak Capital - Flagstaff Partners - Greenstone Partners
Thanks in advance.
Also curious. Who is the best boutique to join in Melb?
All are good, thoughts below. Current Associate at elite boutique.
- Azure Capital - good firm, growing, taking market share from the likes of your Greshams, have been on some big mandates recently, recently opening a Melb team with ex-KPMG partner Nick Combes
- Allier Capital - been around for a while, solid team, strong in healthcare
- Highbury Partners - elite for a small shop, very solid deal flow, first popped into mainstream attention from advising afterpay on sale ($$ bn deal), seem to have 2x rainmaker MD's with consistent deals
- Stanton Road Partners - mostly sponsor deals, pretty strong
- Record Point - ex UBS founder and ex head of IB from DB, on a few decent deals now, elite boutique
- ICA Partners - dont know much about them other than they are infra
- Blackpeak Capital - no idea
- Flagstaff Partners - very old school culture, decent deals, most of the team are old white males
- Greenstone Partners - think they hired a new MD recently who was pretty solid from memory, not as good as some of the above
If you have to pick one and join them in Melbourne, who would it be, and why?
The order for me would be: Flagstaff, Record Point, Highbury (if you're interested in their industries), Stanton Road, Allier, Azure, Greenstone, ICA, Blackpeak
Focus less on the brand and just getting your foot in the door. As an analyst you will learn a lot in the first 1-2 years at any of these places. Then once you find your feet, it's easier to move around when you have experience.
You’re underrating Azure a lot there imo, they get on some good deals
you're right - anything in my list above azure is pretty much equal in my eyes. azure is growing their sponsors team in syd/melb and have some good deals but their bread and butter is resources which doesn't interest me.
Flagstaff, Azure, Highbury (in that order) are a clear cut above the rest and will give you access to top tier deals - haven’t seen the others come up on anything large (admittedly haven’t been following too much)
They’re different
The three you mentioned are ex BB guys who wants to compete with EBs and BBs
The rest are all middle market guys who go for volume. Stanton also gets on some pretty good sponsor sell side exits and Allier was on Lumus which was decent
