Small team in MM

Hey gents,

I have gotten an offer to join a newly formed coverage team in London at a MM. The catch is, the team will just consist of me and a director. We are part of a larger team globally and we'll mostly be working with the Asia/Africa teams on cross-border deals (origination + execution).

I am trying to think through the pros and cons of this set up and I was wondering if anyone who had similar experience can shed some light on this.

Some of the advantages I thought of:

  • Working closely with a senior banker means I will learn a lot and in a short space of time
  • Since it is a small team I will be responsible for a lot of things that are outside of the analyst standard responsibilities

Some of the cons:

  • Workload
  • Overwhelming responsibility
  • What if the senior banker is a dick

The actual agenda/mandate of the team is exciting but I am a bit apprehensive about it so any help would be great!

I think along with overwhelming responsibility is the steep learning curve and not having anyone to really train/help you. There will be some times where you won't know how to do something and your director may also not remember b/c his analyst years are well past him so it's on you to put in the hours and learn how to do it without having much guidance.

Also, the lonely thing is a real factor dude. Had a buddy who was the only analyst for a while in a regional office and he would complain about how much it sucked that he couldn't shoot the shit with someone during late nights. He was so happy when he got interns b/c he finally had someone to play with. Imagine that, being happy about interns. Either way, good luck dude.
