Sophmore 2025 Internships

Hi, I am a finance major at a semi/nontarget school. Rising sophomore. My experience thus far has been very little to do with finance. I understand the best route to breaking into IB junior year would be a regional boutique somewhere near me. I am from the suburbs of Chicago and wondering if there are any RBs that would be good for someone trying to get experience sophomore summer.

Based on previous WSO threads, here are some insights and advice for securing a sophomore summer internship in investment banking, especially if you're targeting regional boutiques near Chicago:

  1. Timing and Application:

    • Most internship programs for sophomore summer will open in the fall and through the winter. It's important to start preparing your applications and networking efforts early.
  2. Targeting Regional Boutiques:

    • Given that breaking into a BB (Bulge Bracket) or EB (Elite Boutique) as a sophomore is challenging, especially for non-diversity candidates, focusing on smaller regional banks is a strategic move.
    • Look for smaller/regional banks in Chicago that may have internship opportunities. These firms often provide valuable experience and can be a stepping stone for junior year internships at larger firms.
  3. Networking:

    • Reach out to boutiques that have senior members from your university or are near your hometown/university. Networking can significantly increase your chances of landing an internship.
    • Document your networking efforts. Create a spreadsheet to track contacts, their firms, alma maters, and the status of your communications.
  4. Geographical Considerations:

    • Since you are from the suburbs of Chicago, focus on firms where you can feasibly work and afford to live. This will help you manage living expenses and leverage local connections.
  5. Additional Resources:

    • For more detailed guidance, you can refer to the WSO thread titled "How to Obtain a Sophomore Summer Boutique IB Internship" which provides a step-by-step approach to securing an internship at a boutique bank.

By following these steps and leveraging your local connections, you can increase your chances of securing a valuable internship experience for your sophomore summer. Good luck!
