Sophomore Summer Internship - Seeking Advice
Hi all,
I am seeking advice regarding the "best" course of action to take this summer in preparation for IB recruitment this fall. Some background: I am a second year (Business) Economics student at a top 20 semi-target public university. I have a 3.9 GPA at said university and internship experience doing PWM at MS. My preferred cities for IB are NYC, SF and LA, in that order.
My summer decision is between: 1. A Treasury Associate Internship at a top Tech company in SF (job description claims the position is "particularly interesting for those interested in banking"), and 2. A Real Estate Private Equity Analyst position at a comparatively smaller shop in NYC. I am worried about being pigeonholed into "real estate" if I go NYC, but am also thinking the possibility of spinning/playing up the "private equity" part could be useful. Anyways, these are the sorts of issues I am hoping you guys could shed some light on.
Any insight/recommendations/suggestions as to which would be the better position for sophomore summer/pre-banking would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all for your time.
Best,
Parker
Given these 2 choices, you should go into the RE Private Equity Analyst position.
Learn all you can about it.
Since you are on the buy-side, you will be involved in valuation: the basics of Trading comps/Transacted comps/ Principles of DCF still apply (which are still relevant to IB).
Spin it, be able to talk intelligently about it, and it will give you your best chance for your IB gig.
100% the PE gig
The PE gig in NYC will allow you to network with banks over the summer. Also, you'll develop a more transferable skill set that will make you a top candidate for your junior summer recruitment. Go with PE.
Agreed PE - don't worry, you won't get pigeon holed as a 19-20 year old. It will be great experience to talk off of next year.
