S&T vs. Ops
I have superday for Ops and S&T for same bank. Can only choose one. Nothing else on the table right now. Chances of FT offer much greater in Ops. Thoughts?

Nobody can tell you what your risk/reward profile looks like here. You'll have to make this choice on your own, and don't trust people on here to actually know whats best for you considering we have no clue who you are.
Best of luck either way.
Select the one you feel gives you the best option at securing a FT position. If you feel comfortable with the S&T interview and think your experience is more relevant then go with that. The same goes for Ops.
I'd also say don't just select Ops if you're not into it because you'll just be miserable for 2 years or vice versa for S&T.
Definitely need more info. What kind of bank is this for? What are you looking to do long term?
Judging from your username, as well as your past posts I'll assume this is for SA at a BB and you're looking to do S&T long term. Based on that it would be silly not to choose the S&T role, no matter how guaranteed you believe the FT offer for Ops will be.
Look at it this way, if you do S&T and don't like it you should have no problem doing Ops either at your bank or somewhere else. Conversely if you do Ops, get the offer and decide you want to move to S&T you will find the move exponentially more difficult.
lol nothing is guaranteed unless you're CEO's son
Ops vs S&T (comments please) (Originally Posted: 12/11/2006)
This might sound like a really stupid question, and probably becuase it is... but I come from a very NON-target school. S&T positions are never recruited from here. What happened is that by luck, high GPA, and a lot of phone calling managed to get an interview for a tier2 S&T position and also got an offer for the position. I also have an offer from a BB Ops position and is now considering both. I feel like the S&T is better and would also fit my skill set better, but would like to have as much comments as possible since I feel like it is one of my most important choises in my life so far. Any input appriciated.
do NOT take the ops job. operations is a fucking joke; doesn't matter if it's Goldman Sachs. what reason could you possibly have for even considering hte ops job?
i've heard you can eventually move from ops to s&t so you might ask about that, see what they say... on the other hand, you could get actual s&t experience and then have that on you resume for when you apply to a BB... it's your call
...take the s&t job...moving from back office to front is very difficult. Taking the ops job is equivalent to buying a scratch off lotto ticket and you will realize this right away if you are dumb enough to take it. Don't worry about whether your grandmother has heard of the firm, just take the trading offer.
Absolutely take the S&T job. It is extremely difficult to move from ops to s&t. Your only real chance in making that move is meeting someone on the trading side who is extremely passionate to help you. But opps often isn't even housed in the same building as the trading floors. Also, all of the back-office jobs are looked down upon by the front-office people, so it's unlikely that you're going to meet lots of traders who want to help you out.
As Zala rules said, it is much much much better to be at a 2nd tier bank doing front-office work than at a bulge bracket doing back-office work.
Dpiderit is wrong; opps is mostly process-driven work. Opps people aren't creating value the way that traders are - traders are the ones who build the models etc. I don't see how opps builds the skills needed for s&t.
Thank you all for your comments! Very appriciated.
Bondarb: You are absolutely right about the grandmother comment but it was my mom "You do not decline an offer from XX" She does only look to the firms name and not to the actual positions.

Probably not something you should take advice from your mum on this one. I have interned in Ops at a BB before and trust me, the shift is harder. I rejected teh full time position because I knew it wont get you anywhere. In fact I ll go so far as to say, you ll find it easier to transition to the BBs S&T program from the smaller firm than from Ops(provided you do well)
agreed, the front office role will provide much better experience than the ops role. not to mention you will have a lot more options down the line.
Work/life balance -- work on average from 7 until 4-6PM. Never weekends.
Both trading and ops do okay on work life balance. Only thing is that trading is obviously more stressful
How is the movement from PWM to S&T? Is that a more possible route than Ops?
