I signed with a BB and the contract mentioned a relocation bonus, which I have yet to receive. It's kind of frustrating because I need to pay my damn rent. Is this standard practice?

I know of one BB that isn't paying some full-time analysts until after they start.
Doesn't make any damn sense.
Most BBs received their relocation bonuses quite a while ago.
My relocation bonus will be included in my first paycheck.
Same I start in August get my relocation in the middle of August....doesn't make much sense to me either, wouldn't we need to "relocate" before we start?
They did let me know this in the contract details though.
Think of it in terms of a reimbursement for your relocation expenses rather than an upfront payment.

You can certainly view it that way, which I'm sure they do.
Problem is we're broke, college graduates, some of whom are moving to the most expensive city in the country, and most apartments don't take credit card for rent.
I completely 100% sympathize with what you're saying. Looking at it from the other point of view (and I don't agree with this view but for the sake of argument): The bank you're joining isn't obligated to pick up your expenses. You applied for a job in that city and they hired you, so it isn't their responsibility to make sure you can afford it.
To the original poster: If you haven't received it yet and your start date is in June, you'll likely get it alongside your first paycheck. This is not too uncommon of a practice.

In my offer letter it said that my signing bonus was "anticipated to be paid on or around December 31, 2011" but I have heard no word regarding said bonus. My question is, when (if ever) is it acceptable to e-mail HR to ask when my bonus is coming in the mail? Thanks.

I'm recently accepted an offer to join a firm about 2 months ago. However, I've not gotten the sign-on bonus credited to my bank account yet (the offer letter said 45 days, which has passed).
Is this the norm for others in my boat (those who have accepted offers recently)? What is the etiquette in terms of reaching out to HR? Should I gently remind them or just leave the issue?
Wait until Friday, most banks do pay on Fridays and they may administer it during their normal payroll period.
I am in a similar boat although I signed a bit later than you. I wouldn't worry. I would imagine that it might have something to do with your background check processing. Can't hurt to send an email to HR, although obviously be tactful and phrase it as "wondering if I could get a status update on when to expect info on start date/next steps/signing bonus payment" as opposed to "where's my damn signing bonus?".
I received mine about two weeks after I signed.
You should feel free to email HR. Just be tactful. I did and they said it would come on the 28th - so maybe that's the same situation for you.
Just e-mail HR. Don't worry about it, you won't piss them off.

So I was promised a signing bonus from a BB to be paid at the end of December and I still have not recieved it. I contacted HR a few weeks ago and they said it was pushed back a few weeks, but that revised date was a week ago and still no check.
Should I just play it cool or should I email them again? I need the money to pay a few bills but don't want to email them twice and come off as pushy/annoying.
Is anyone else going through this? What should I do?

Just be patient. You'll get it eventually. Wait a few more days and then contact HR.
Still waiting, was supposed to receive by the end of February.
My e-mail from HR in January about the bonus said that they won't know for sure when exactly the checks will rise because of the high volume of checks being sent out, so even HR may not be able to accurately answer your question.

my sign-in & relocation are both suppose to come in with the first paycheck.. which kind of defeats the purpose. it would greatly greatly help me if I could get at one a little earlier, to avoid a liquidity crisis when I move in / get ready to start work

Any advice if we're not getting our bonus until our first paycheck? That's about a 6k hole (rent deposit, furniture, etc) and I have no idea how to cover it.
Get a loan from your parents, or if you can't, get a credit card.
I don't know if I can do either of those... my score is 675 with a very short history and I don't think I can get my current card raised nearly enough and/or open a new one with that kind of credit limit.
pretty sure you're gonna be ok with a 675, might have slightly higher interest rates in the long run, but the good news is that you usually don't pay any interest in the first 6 months to a year

HR is probably getting bombarded with the exact same question from other kids, so keep that in mind if you contact them. Ideally have some bullshit reason to need to check in, like wanting to update your address and hopefully they'll give you some additional insight to whats going on.
Think about how serious/necessary it is for you to get this cash now. If you just want to have the flexibility to drop more bills at $1 beer night, give HR a break.
