Still trying to make sense of this end of internship interview for SA2020

It seems as though some firms that havent already announced auto FT could possibly do an interview or some type of evaluation at the end of the already shortened and most likely completely virtual internship to choose FT offers. Specifically with the interview I already understand that theres not much new that one can say even after doing the virtual inter ship that will be different from what has already been said during the interview for the actual internship. What I'm trying to understand is how likely that firms do this since it seems like theres really no purpose other than to use it as a way to cut people instead of overhire.
