Summer Analyst -> Return Offer In Different City? Possible?
Hey fellas,
Just curious if its possible to get a return offer from a BB (IBD) and have them direct the return offer to another office in the region? The move I am looking to make is Beijing -> Hong Kong, but obviously any anecdotes for similar moves would be great (NY -> LA, Paris -> LDN, etc).
Thanks.
Have seen this done multiple times (NY -> LA, SF -> NY, LA -> NY, LA -> SF, Chi -> NY) at quite a handful of BBs, it is definitely possible. I would go through HR about it though, your team might not be receptive to you switching locations.
I would talk to folks in Hong Kong on the DL
Get the return offer and then let your staffer know you're interested in x office
Do NOT bring it up until you have an offer
If the bank is GS, they will be very receptive and make it happen. Most BBs will make it happen if there is a spot but GS is exceptionally receptive
Why is that? Care to share any concrete examples that you've heard of at GS?
I think GS is open to internal mobility more than most firms. They even have a concrete process for interns released some weeks into the summer to formally apply to X group in Y division at Z location. Probably what Mark2010 is getting at.
I've definitely heard of people moving geographically at other firms too (eg going from a summer at Wells in NC to full time in NY)
Anyone know about JP? I want to change from chi to ny
Switching office after internship for FT (Originally Posted: 03/25/2015)
Hi Guys,
Got an FT offer after my internship in a regional office. I was the only intern and I was quite lucky to even get the internship in the first place. How bad would it be if I asked to transfer to another office for FT (NYC)? Should I wait a year after I start FT?
Thanks in advance.

Once you get the full time offer, then you can ask for a different office. At that point, it doesn't hurt to ask because the worst thing they can do is say no.
Transferring Internship Offers to another City (Originally Posted: 02/26/2008)
Hi guys,
Keen to get some perspective on a problem that many of us face. How do you transfer an offer from one city to another? eg if you interned with a bank in HK, London, Singapore, etc how would you request to transfer to the equivalent group in the same bank in NY as a full time analyst? Is it too tough to do now because of the hiring conditions or is it a case of knowing some senior guys in NY? Also how do you make sure your current office's bosses don't get pissed off at you while trying to get them to back you?
Thanks for the insights
I know smaller firms (boutiques/ elite boutiques) are not receptive of this from my experience because you get trained on how the team operates and how they want things done. Wasting their time if they train you over the summer and you move to a different team that might operate differently.
bump - any thoughts much appreciated
Why are you so keen to go to NY while investment world is moving toward East rapidly? China, India, Russia, and Gulf region are key markets for the years to come, not USA.
Bump - can anyone comment on a move from SF to NY, from internship to return offer? SF location is for tech.
Transferring to another Location after SA (Originally Posted: 03/28/2013)
Hey guys,
I will be summering at a top BB/Elite Boutique (GS/MS/JPM/LAZ/EVR/GHL) in a regional office (think Chicago, Houston, LA) and want to transfer to another location, possibly NY or SF. Is it common for SAs to transfer locations after their summer if they are given an offer by the bank? Are there any banks that do this often or are notorious for not allowing this?
Thanks

Lol you could have just made a new thread instead of bumping one from 4 years ago
Moving BB offices from regional to NYC after SA (Originally Posted: 12/08/2015)
I'll be doing my SA stint at a regional BB this summer. I was wondering if it would be possible to transfer to NYC for Full time if they were to make me a return offer.
From what I gathered in my Houston search they really don't like it, especially if you misrepresented your interest in working in Houston for the interview process. That said if you are quite talented and perform well in your internship it should be possible. You should know best what the BBs view on talent management is. For instance I got the sense someone like JPM might not care too much but someone like GS might care a lot.
Location transfer after SA? (Originally Posted: 11/04/2013)
How common is it for summer analysts who have offers to be able to transfer to another city? Ex. could an SA at a Chicago office of a BB transfer to NY for full time? any of you successfully done this?
