Sustainable/Renewable Banking in Canada

A fair number of banks are rolling out coverage groups focused on renewable energy, 'impact banking' etc. Is there a future in this as a banker? Something you could actually make a career out of?

All you need to do is take a look at renewable energy projections over the next 50 years to answer this question. I work in the project finance space of renewables and I can tell you that the space has been hot for a bit and will continue to heat up. Offshore is just starting in North America and there is a lot of push at the federal and state levels to really grow this. Solar and onshore wind are also extremely huge areas, a massive part of the proposed infrastructure bill in front of Congress is allocated to renewables.

For every project that is developed, someone has to acquire it. Banks play a big part in M&A and equity/debt fundraising. Just be aware that renewables M&A looks really different than traditional corporate M&A.

As for Canadian banks, I work with CIBC a bit. They're really competent guys and have a lot of connections to the large infra and renewable infra PE players.
