Switch From CorpFin to IB:

Hey everyone,

I'm currently an incoming fourth year at an accredited university finishing up a Corporate Finance Internship in NYC. After going through this process, as well as having the taste of living in NYC, its's apparent that the environment of Corporate Finance isn't necessarily for me. I wanted to to reach out to this forum this morning to see if anybody has any guidance regarding the jump from Corporate Finance to Investment Banking? Since being in the city, I've been working to utilize my network, as well as have been preparing technically for any banking interview opportunity that may arise. I understand that 'anyone' can say that they want to move to Investment Banking - that is not me as this is a new found interest for me and is one that I know I have the grit, passion, and willingness to learn to be able to create an impact. This is a journey that I'm both excited and optimistic for and know that any piece of knowledge that I pick up will not harm me.

I appreciate any and all guidance - thank you!

You have a lot of catching up to do if you desire a spot in the 2023 cohort. First thing I would do is get an interview prep guide and spend alot of time reading stuff on WSO. Get on YouTube and watch videos by peak frameworks and rareliquid on the industry. Then, I would get LinkedIn premium for a month and start aggressively searching for school alumni in IB. Hit them up via inmail or dm and set up calls/meetups. Consider extending your time at school if you want the best chance at recruiting (IB likes students with some runway). Also consider your long term goals and where in the pecking order you would like to go (regional boutique, boutique, MM, BB/EB). Lastly, consider taking an offer at your current firm or, more generally, in corp fin and delay IB recruiting until you get an MBA. Good luck
