Taking a leave before hitting the desk

Not going to disclose much of my situation for anonymity but finishing up training and have been going through mental health issues. At this rate, once I hit the desk, I doubt I would last long. Is there any possibility that I might be able to talk to my staffer and disclose this to see if I can get a delayed start (2 - 6 months) to sort this out?

There are some things fine to joke / shitpost about, but mental health is not one of them.  It's hard to explain to anyone who has not experienced (or been very close to someone who has experienced) serious mental health issues, but this type of commentary is not helpful and can be damaging.  Although this is a simple sentence posted by an anonymous user, I felt it's worth flagging for those who make these kind of jokes online (like a coward) or in-person (which is generally unlikely for someone of this poster's character).  I personally know a number of people who have, or have had, mental health issues who would meet every definition of strength (and success) that you might have..

I believe it's entirely reasonable to explore with your staffer, and banks have meaningfully improved on how they approach mental health over the past decade.  Although you may experience some judgment from future colleagues, those who actually matter to your career should have the maturity (and likely life experience) to understand the situation.  I historically struggled with severe anxiety (to the point of dropping out of high school and obtaining a GED), so have some understanding of how mental health issues can severely impact day-to-day life... Feel free to PM if you ever want to talk through anything.  It does get better.

Yes.  Get a doctor’s note and take a leave. If you are struggling before starting, get your mental health sorted out for a few months before starting work. Look after your well-being first.  The work and the bank will go on without you.  Take care.

Take the leave, your bank will allow it. I had serious mental health issues due to stuff happening prior to starting and I wish I had just taken a medical leave after training. Trying to make everything work while working banking hours/getting used to being bad at things/adapting to stress, isn’t going to help your mental health issues. You are worth more than a job, they will understand. Take care of yourself!!!

Yes, 100%. Talk to your staffer first just to keep them in the loop, then HR. Say you are really grateful for the offer and looking forward to starting, but you have had a severe medical issue come up [don't say mental health, even if they press you, just be vague and say you need a few months to sort this out] and need to start in January. Ask if they can do an unpaid medical leave and organize your start later on.

You will need a doctor's note saying you are under their treatment and can't start until X date so get going on that in the meantime

Good thing about working for a large bank is they see this situation a lot and have procedures in place to support you. Best of luck, it gets better.
