Should be no problem to take extra walks totaling 15-30-minutes a day. The health benefit is huge. At my previous shop, it would however have raised eyebrows. Would you be OK with your intern doing this on a daily basis, provided it's during downtime, being reachable by phone, and not too far away? Is the proper etiquette to ask/flag, or just go?

Obviously you shouldn't be leaving if there's a possibility for a firedrill to pop up. Just tell whoever you're working with that you're gonna go grab a coffee.
