Tech M&A vs Coverage

I think the M&A group at my BB has an opening. I am thinking about exploring that opportunity. My group is big and has a lot of bankers with good culture. Decent exits recently ( HIG/SL/Softbank other growth equity etc)

If I go to M&A my life would be way worse but I want to know if my PE Odds increase by a lot if I do M&A vs coverage

Assuming you mean M&A vs Tech coverage at a BB then you have:

GS: not possible (no M&A group)

MS: I would take M&A since it’s one of the best groups on the street

JPM: M&A will probably give you slightly better exit than tech but JPM has pretty solid groups across the board so depends on if the marginal difference is worth it to you

BAML: Would probably take M&A as their strongest groups are their product groups

C: M&A probably their best group as citi is known to have stronger product groups when coverage groups so would definitely consider it if you want a shot at the bigger PE firms

CS: doubt it’s CS since you said you have good culture and tech is notoriously sweaty.

Barclays: no M&A team

UBS: TMT used to be a top group, not sure anymore but wouldn’t assume M&A to be much (if at all) better with exits

DB: honestly no idea, if you want strongest exits possible then maybe M&A is a “safer” bet since it’s M&A but neither necessarily standout for top of street groups so not too sure
