Technicals Review Thread

Monkeys,

I'm currently getting into the thick of interview season, and I know that many of you are as well. I've had some difficult technical questions crop up, and wanted to bounce them off of some of you. I haven't seen a general thread for technicals in this forum, and was thinking that it might be a good idea to start one so that we can have a single thread serve as a one-stop reference point for collaboration on any interesting/difficult technicals that we've gotten in your interviews.

I'll start off with this one:

1) How do you account for equity investments (20% - 50%) on a firm's income statement? How do equity investments factor into a firm's enterprise value?

As far as enterprise value goes, are equity investments counted as cash equivalents, and thus subtracted out of enterprise value?
