Those who exited from IB to corp dev - how did you make another move to exit into P&L or managerial roles?

VP in IBD here considering exit as I see no chance for myself originating as a D.

But what I have seen in corp dev is pretty depressing. Sure some corp dev roles are cushy but many of them are treated as a back office function within finance department - business heads drive the decision and corp dev seems to be an internal opportunity screening team that just do admin work for them.

The business heads make the call and sometimes decisions are top down from them - corp dev just help to assess or the other way round they receive teasers then cascade to business heads.

Promotion seems difficult there as everyone just stick around for so long and teams cannot expand forever so you have a 20yoe head with a handful of juniors stuck as the boss won't retire.

I see some guys manage to promote to adjacent positions such as commercial finance / partnerships / finance GM at a business segment. How does that work? Seems rare but I am hoping to get a sense how to pivot out before making such move.
