Thoughts on BofA energy?

I see they are currently hiring.. any intel on the strength of this group? I assume most of the MDs are based in Houston with a relatively small amount of mid level/junior bankers located in NYC

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about BofA's energy group:

  • Office Dynamics: The BofA energy group in Houston is primarily sustained by its capital markets and lending activities, similar to many other bulge bracket banks in the area. They don't engage heavily in M&A activities.
  • Reputation: The office is considered "meh" in terms of deal flow and overall activity, but BofA still holds a strong brand name which can be beneficial for your resume.
  • Location of MDs and Bankers: Most of the senior leadership, including MDs, are likely based in Houston, given the focus on energy. The presence of mid-level and junior bankers in NYC is relatively small compared to Houston.

If you're considering a position there, the brand name of BofA can be a significant advantage, even if the specific office might not be the most active in M&A.

I know one person pretty good there in Houston, then some others that I've met a few times but I wouldn't say I'm super close with - my impression from what they've told me is pretty positive. It is a busy group but from what I hear they do take protected weekends seriously, idk what was going on with that FIG team but this has not been what they've told me about energy and these guys and gals have no reason to lie to me or sugarcoat. Also, they brought over Randy Bayless in 2022 who was Credit Suisse's Houston co-head with the other co-head being Tim Perry, so they've got talent at the top. Point being is that my impression overall is positive for their team.
