Tipping MDs in 2025

How much is everyone tipping their MDs in 2025? I don't work in IB, but I figure they must be really struggling, so I tip random MDs. I generally tip about 10% of my salary to each of 11 or 12 different MDs - I have to take out personal loans to eat, but the leverage is fine, because it's an investment in my future.

You’re thinking about this the right way, and I’m impressed by your ability to already “see the bigger picture” despite being a junior. With that said I think your approach is a little agressive. Tapping into your food budget to tip your MD is good initiative but you’re not going to be as productive if you go a few days without eating, and your MDs deserve quality work just as much as they deserve a portion of your take home pay.

I do a tiered system where I tip my seniors based on rank. This year I’m also tipping my analysts to show I’m grateful for everything they do.

MD and Above: $2,000 each

Director: $1,500 each

VPs: $1,000 each

Staffer Bonus: +$200 as a thank you for all the Friday night staffings

Analysts: $10 Starbucks gift card, 2 zyns, and a bottle of Vivy 40 mgs each in a stocking

I know it looks light but remember it’s not all about cash quantum. To round it out I offer to pick up my MDs kids from school, sleep with my Director and VPs wives, and drop off my analysts dry cleaning and call their parents for them. January - November is all about work, but Devember is all about the people you work with. Never forget that.
