Transferring coverage groups after internship

How possible is it to transfer laterally to a different coverage group than the one you interned in?

I'll be interning in a well-respected coverage group at GS/MS/JPM (NYC office), and was wondering how common it is for someone to intern in one group then lateral to a different coverage group once starting full-time (even if after a few months). The primary motive behind doing so would be pure interest in the specific industry.

Has anyone made this transition themselves or know of someone who has? What would it take to make the transition, assuming a return offer and the summer internship goes well? Appreciate any insight.

Also interested- In the same situation in a strong coverage group but have interest in another (same banks too GS/MS/JPM)

Is there a process during the internship? Would it prevent you from getting a return from your original team?

In EMEA if that changes advice.
