Resume Background:
Fresh out of UG in May. Engineering degree and a lot of internship experience on the buyside. Secured an off-cycle FO spot at a regional office for a BB in a quantitative role. Not the typical S&T, but it's under that umbrella. Been there a few months now. Taking CFA L1 in Dec and purchased TTS modeling program.
End Goal:
Work as an Analyst or PM at a heavy fundamental L/S equity or multi-asset class HF.
Need Advice:
My BB job was exactly what I needed when I needed it the most. It finally got a good name on my resume and the pay is good for the area. However, what I'm doing now has no relevance to what I want to do in the future.
I've always loved investing and making pitches, and as I've come more experienced, I found I really enjoy the special situation plays. There's a lot of potential value being unlocked there, creating a lot of opportunities. To get more experience in this area, I figured getting an M&A analyst role would put me in a good position to learn. My idea of visiting hell for 2 years was confirmed when I met with the COO of my dream HF and he told me they look for people specifically in M&A and Corp finance.
Now here's where I need some advice. I've only been working for a few months, but I feel I need to make the move ASAP to show my interest and start getting real experience. To do this, I've considered 2 options:
1. Setup a meeting w/ the guy who heads up product groups at the regional office. Express my interest, tell my story, and explain that I want to stay at the office. I see this as being a tad risky since the office is fairly small (100 people) and word could spread.
2. Use my contacts to go through FT recruiting at other BB's. I could explain the situation, explain why I want to move elsewhere, and come in through a real analyst class.
Obviously it'd be easier to stay at my current BB, but I need to get away from what I'm doing and I'm willing to do about anything for that. Any and all advice is appreciated!
