Based on the most helpful WSO content, the decision between Tripletree and SMBC should hinge on your career goals and preferences. Here are some factors to consider:

  1. People and Culture: You mentioned loving the people in the SMBC group you interviewed with. This is a significant factor, as enjoying the team you work with can greatly impact your day-to-day experience and long-term satisfaction.

  2. Career Growth and Opportunities: Evaluate the type of deals and exposure each firm offers. Tripletree is known for its focus on healthcare investment banking, which could be advantageous if you're interested in specializing in that sector. SMBC, on the other hand, is a larger institution with a broader platform, which might provide more diverse opportunities.

  3. Prestige and Exit Opportunities: While SMBC is a well-known global bank, Tripletree might offer more niche expertise in healthcare. If you're considering exit opportunities, think about which firm's brand and experience align better with your long-term goals.

  4. Work-Life Balance: Research the work-life balance at both firms. Larger institutions like SMBC might have more structured hours, while boutique firms like Tripletree could have a more intense workload depending on deal flow.

  5. Compensation: Compare the compensation packages, including base salary, bonuses, and benefits. This can vary significantly between a boutique and a larger bank.

Ultimately, if you feel a strong connection with the SMBC team and believe it aligns with your career aspirations, it could be the right choice. However, if you're drawn to healthcare banking or a more specialized role, Tripletree might be worth considering.

Guessing its Sponsor Finance under LevFin? Good group if you want to work on Debt Financing transactions, exit to PC, etc. It just depends on what your goal/ what your interest is. If you want to do PE or work on IB M&A deals, then TT, if you're looking for a better WLB and want to work on Financing deals and eventually exit to private credit, then LevFin would be the way to go. Sponsors is closer to Corporate Banking than a true IB Coverage group at another bank, so really just up to what you're looking for.
