UBS Group Placement Process

Can anyone offer some color into what the placement process will look like for UBS this year? Official placement email has not gone out, supposedly there is an in-person "Meet The Teams" event, and an intern portal is being utilized for the process? When will placement officially start and how will it look given it's a bit different than past years?

This year, they changed to be in person and have constructed a UFC-style fighting octagon in Weehawken. Interns get to fight Hunger Games style for a LF offer, while the losers get relegated to  100 hour weeks on pitches in M&T and RELL. May the odds be ever in your favor!

Controversial

Dear Incoming Interns,

Thank you for your thoughtful questions regarding the UBS Group Placement Process. We’re excited to confirm that this year’s process will be slightly different and designed to better identify each intern’s unique strengths.

The process will begin with an in-person “Meet the Teams” event in Weehawken. During this session, interns will have the opportunity to circulate among coverage groups while senior bankers observe critical traits such as nodding at the appropriate moments, laughing at MD jokes, and demonstrating the ability to say “happy to take that offline” with confidence.

Following this networking session, interns will submit their group preferences through the Intern Portal, which will then be carefully reviewed and almost entirely ignored.

Placement decisions will instead be determined through a rigorous evaluation process including:

• The 2:47 AM Formatting Challenge – converting a 200-page pitchbook from Arial to UBS-approved Calibri while the printer repeatedly jams

• The “Quick Turn” Test – rebuilding a three-statement model after an MD says “just make it cleaner”

• The Strategic Patience Exercise – sitting through a two-hour internal call where nobody knows why the call exists

At the conclusion of this process, interns demonstrating the highest levels of endurance and Excel resilience will be placed into coverage groups, while others will receive exciting opportunities supporting high-priority pitch activity in M&T, Tech and RELL, where they will gain immediate exposure to the firm’s core competency: slides that will never be sent to a client.
We look forward to meeting everyone soon and wish you the best of luck in the process.

Remember: at UBS, every intern has a voice… it just may not affect the outcome.

Best regards,

Nice try M&A group placement recruiter.

M&T and M&A are the worst groups in the bank by a wide margin across WLB, culture, and exits. RELL and FIG are also pretty terrible, but have relatively more bright spots. The best relative WLB (unsure on culture) groups are Sponsors (by far the best WLB, but they have also fired analysts recently) and Tech. The only groups with actual deal flow is LevFin, Consumer, and Industrials; other coverage groups have some bright spots but not overall good flow (ex. Fintech in FIG and Tech ECM in Tech).

God forbid that kid gets some actual insight.

From my understanding the process isn’t much more in depth than what you already know. It’s on you to reach out to the contacts they will/have gave you for different groups under global banking. Network your ass off, especially if you want a more sought after group.

WSO is probably gonna convince you to recruit again for FT so ultimately it’s not the end of the world if you don’t get your top groups!

Seconding this. It's all about networking now before the formal in-person meeting. Groups are going to be evaluating interns way before that and you are doing a disservice if you do not network now. Whatever happens just be sure to avoid M&T, M&A, and RELL (to a lesser degree than the first two); the groups to target have been repeated ad-nauseam on this forum so no need to repeat IMO.
