UBS IB in NYC

ok, I am not just concerned with top groups because I know that will just receieve a response that tells me to do a search. I accepted a summer analyst offer there and just curious on everyone's opinions of UBS IB in NYC (good or bad). Appreciate anything about what anyone has heard/experienced about culture, exit opps, certain groups, anything. Just trying to get as much info and thoughts as possible. Thanks.

As with most BBs the culture varies from group to group. It generally trickles down from the senior bankers. I have worked for several banks (most of them foreign) and have found them to be more relaxed and easy going then their U.S. counterparts (ex. Lehman). But again, everything is group dependent. The only major difference I found when dealing with the SA and FT recruiting (vs. other banks) several years ago and my contact with them since, is that the girls are nice, generally smart, and responsive (and some are quite hot). This is a big help as nothing pisses me off more than an unhelpful HR department. As for groups, UBS is known for healthcare and UBS-LA (although Moehlis left a year ago). Other good groups include Energy (mostly out of Houston), RELL (Hilton Deal), Power (made up of former top Lehman bankers-including Metcalfe), LatAm, ECM (UBS big in all areas of equities), and Global Industrials is pretty strong.

UBS's mentality in the past 5 years (and could change) is to go after the big deals. 2006 was probably there best year ever in the U.S. However, outside the U.S. is where they are strongest. They dominate the Bralizian IPO market (70%) after buying Pactual, furthermore they are one of the top banks throughout LatAM. In Europe, they generally run about #3 throughout the continent. I do not know anything about Russia or the Middle East. In China, Goldman and UBS are the only banks with a domestic banking licenses, and between the two have a stranglehold on domestic capital markets (at least up until now). UBS was by volume and by size far and away the leading investment bank in China.
