What do Head of groups actually do differently?

Are they just a stock MD with a title that perhaps will have some oversight/influence on economics allocation at the partner level?

What’s the difference in role between say an MD and a Head of Software or Head of TMT.

Is it purely a title?

They lead the group's strategy, headcount, admin stuff, and bonuses. They are effectively responsible for the results in their subverticals and verticals. You get promoted to "head" titles by being an MD who brings in a lot of revenue, and most stay and get promoted further by being a good leader. It's a bit of an issue, whereas the people promoted might not necessarily be the best leaders, usually just the MDs who bring in a lot of revenue.
