What Do You Guys Actually Use Two Monitors (+Laptop) For?

Excuse my ignorance, but it seems that many of you now have a WFH setup that features two monitors as well as a laptop. Just curious as to what you do with essentially three screens? Could you manage with one monitor? Thanks.

1 for the model (excel), 1 for the data source (equity research, a website, etc), one for the output (usually Powerpoint). Throw in Outlook and a file explorer (I use Q-Dir) and you still may have some applications in the background – alt-tab is your friend!

One can (and does) make do with just a laptop screen while traveling, but it's not as efficient to constantly be cycling through tabs.

You could manage but it makes it so efficient to have 2. You can have a spreadsheet open on one and have a site you are pulling data on the other side.

"Lloyd Blankfein" laptop stands are POINTLESS and STUPID
I disagree. Been bending over a laptop for like a year and a half now. Considering one of these gay stands for my health

  1. MPP/Project Plans or whatever deck I am currently formatting
  2. (laptop) Calendar/emails to see how I am doing on time + details of the PLZ FIX I got from client
  3. 17 different spreadsheets on in the background and task manager so I can tab easily to see why my Computer keeps BSODing.
  4. Personal computer on the side to manage personal emails, my brokerage/IRAs, and my other businesses.

Usually something like:

  • Left monitor always where I have my Google Chrome tabs.
  • Right monitor where I have Outlook.
  • Laptop in the middle below the monitors and is usually Spotify / Slack / Zoom (or whatever TV show / movie I'm also trying to watch), in which case Slack moves to top right.

Usually use OneNote in top left too, then whatever Excel model / PPT deck / IC memo being worked on is going to be either on the left side or right side, with whatever reference docs needed on the other side (usually main file being worked on will be on the left though).
