What exit opportunities are your top analysts choosing?
I’m nearing the end of my two years in investment banking. I dread the work, and for the past two years, the only way I’ve motivated myself is that 2 years in IB would open doors. Now, I’m wondering - what are those doors? PE, obviously is a big one. But beyond that, where are the analysts in your class going? PM roles seem interesting, but I’m not sure how realistic they are given how tech is doing. I also don’t find corporate development super interesting. A start-up could be exiting, but after getting accustomed to the money in banking, I’m not sure if I’m willing to take that much of a salary hit.
I don’t mean to come across entitled in this post. I’m just considering what exit opportunities y’all / your fellow analysts are pursuing after 2-years.
For now, I’m just planning on sticking around because I don’t know what to do. there are 2 options I’m considering though:
OPTION 1
One thing I’m considering doing is the startup route. And if after a few years I decide to reprioritize money or the startup fails, I can get an MBA and go back into banking.
OPTION 2
On the other hand, if I just stay until VP, before doing something I’m more passionate in, I can probably command more when I exit. Then I get both $$ and something I’m passionate in. Sacrifice your 20s for long-term career.
I’m very torn. Any thoughts on either of these options?
