What happens when first year analysts quit?

Currently a senior in college who got a return offer in IB. I'm content with my current bank but I tried to recruit FT, which was unsuccessful. Have heard anecdotes from my friends at multiple banks where first year analysts have already / are contemplating leaving their jobs in the coming months. What happens to these spots? Are they filled by laterals? Do applications or processes for spring grads open up? Obviously don't want to read too much into it but just curious.
