At the height of the crisis, European M&A activity fell by circa 70% month-on-month, as the market for private equity deals relying on debt issuance fizzled out.
Going forward, an interesting shift in the acquisition paradigm could involve hedge funds directly undertaking (and holding on to) the debt to finance the private equity deals, thus cutting out investment banks altogether (see Hellman & Friedman's buyout of Goodman Global)
