What is the purpose of preinternship/early insight programs
Hey y'all, I was looking through the career sites of many of these investment banks, and noticed a lot of "pre-internship/early insight" opportunities that were basically 2 day events. What are the purpose of these events? I know that they require interviews, essays, and resumes, so I'm assuming they are very selective. Do they lead into internships/get you an interview for one?

It's a good way for banks to scout potential talent early, before that talent has been swayed by competitors. Generally, yes, if you do well, HR and the people you met will help you with recruiting for the coming year. Moreover, getting into one of these programs early on as a student is a small signal to other employers, showing that you have an inkling of what you want to do professionally, and puts a big name on your resume early on.
Definitely apply for them; the majority are generally very well run and fun to boot.
Things like MS Early Insights & other BB programs are typically diversity feeders. The programs are designed to cater to primarily sophomores and freshmen who are URM/female/LGBT and set them up to take sophomore summer spots/diversity junior spots.
Historically there has been some number of offers given out for certain banks (ex: I know Barclays gave out offers last spring), but with the recruitment timeline pushed so far ahead I'm not sure if its going to be the same going forward. If you're not one of the 'underrepresented groups', you have a very small chance of attending one of these events but it is still possible to be selected, so definitely apply.

I hear some (maybe all?) employers are inviting their IBD summer analyst class to some sort of pre-intership training session at their regional HQ (NYC,London or HK).
I was wondering whether they really teach you some useful material, like excel shortcuts, basics for modelling, financial statements analysis etc? What exactly do they teach you? (I assume many of you have experienced it...)
Or is it more like having some fun with fellow interns, getting to know the company you work for; basically merely a marketing thing to assure that every intern is in love with the company at the end of the week? If so, what kind of entertainment is usually provided?
Or is it a combination of both (teaching finance+entertainment)? If yes, what factor would prevail?
For those of you who are very familiar with this: Which bank is generally accepted to be offering the best intern training?
