What Opportunities Are There In Kansas City?

I'm a senior in high school, and I am applying to colleges right now. I'm looking for a role in high finance or something prominent in the business world after college. I've lived in rural Kansas my whole life and would like to stay around the area. Also, with my academic success, I can get into a strong investment banking or high-finance target school.

What opportunities are there for high finance in Kansas City, if anything? Also, what other solid business opportunities in Kansas City besides high finance are there?

Thanks.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, Kansas City is not specifically mentioned as a major hub for high finance opportunities. However, there are other cities that are known for their business opportunities outside of the traditional finance hubs like NYC and SF. Here are some insights:

  1. Chicago: Known for opportunities within industrials, healthcare, and consumer and retail sectors. Major firms like Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and Citi have a presence here.

  2. Other Cities:

    • Austin: Known for tech opportunities.
    • Raleigh/Durham: Emerging opportunities, though on the lower end compared to other cities.
  3. Alternative Career Paths: If high finance is not prominent in Kansas City, consider other lucrative fields:

    • Corporate Management
    • Professional Services: Corporate law, consulting, big accounting, financial advisory, lobbying.
    • Entrepreneurship
    • Sales: Headhunting, luxury goods, med/tech/pharma.
  4. Skilled/Technical Jobs:

    • Software Engineering
    • Data Science and Analytics
    • Design and Media
    • Healthcare: Medicine, dentistry.

While Kansas City might not be a top-tier city for high finance, exploring these alternative career paths and considering nearby cities with stronger business opportunities could be beneficial.

There are no decent IBs left since Baum dissolved. Your best bet is to go work in another MW city (Chicago, Minny) and move back to KC for PE or family office, of which there are a couple decent shops.

Great Range raised a new fund and is looking more like a legit PE firm, CPC is an active family office, several mezz shops in the area.
