What Second Year Internships Would Look Best For IB?

I am hoping to do Investment Banking when I graduate like many others on here. I am at UVA and am currently interning, in the summer after my first year, with a startup. I am creating their pitch deck and financial model so they can get funding from investors. I know that this isn't the best first year opportunity but I don't think it is worst. I was hoping to find out how different opportunities rank for second year summer especially in the eyes of investment banks whose internship programs I will be applying to for the summer after my third year. Thank you so much for your input!

Most F500's have a FLDP (Financial Leadership Development Program). They are competitive programs to get into but will set you up nicely for banking or any career in finance. Most F500's in general don't take a lot of sophomores but it doesn't matter apply anyways. I have interned at an F50 in their FLDP as a sophomore.

In terms of a "list", it would literally be the F500 lol. Just look up their career sites and apply come August/September. Wouldn't hurt to network with people going through their respective programs now. LinkedIn is a great tool for that.

What you're doing right now is great for a freshman summer. It doesn't really matter. Sophomore summer try and get an internship at a boutique, not an EB like Evercore as they don't take sophomores, but an actual 10-15 person office boutique. That's what I'm doing right now. If you can't get that try and do some F500 finance internship. I've seen people get BB SA offers from my nontarget with no prior summer internships so don't overthink everything.

From my personal experience I can recommend Big4 in one of the transaction services / M&A teams

The intern work you will be doing is similar to intern work during your BB summer. Actually at a big4 you might even do 'more interesting' stuff as the team might be smaller and clients are waaaay smaller. So if you prove yourself quickly and are lucky with the team you will learn a lot! Here in Europe getting a place at a Big4 is also relatively easy given that they have tons of regional offices!

I did it as pre IB summer and can highly recommend it

Common internships I've seen people do sophomore year that have led to BB IB:

  • BB/MM IB (Usually diversity, if you have any Hispanic/African heritage you are eligible just apply and see for yourself)
  • Boutique IB (Actual regional boutiques, not EB)
  • Valuation/Transaction Services
  • F500 Corporate Finance
  • FP&A anywhere from micro startups to regional companies
  • Boutique AM
  • BB PWM

Honestly, any of these are fine and would get you first rounds across EB/BB coming from UVA. Just keep your GPA above a 3.5, ideally 3.7+.

I've seen tons of kids from GU/UVA/Duke go from waiters or lifeguards sophomore summer to BB IB junior summer. It's more about networking and telling a good story when you are coming from a target school.

Oh man. I totally forgot. Those are definitely up there after IB and before most of the other stuff besides valuations/transactions.

There’s TONS of search funds and stuff that let you do unpaid/remote internships which are amazing resume builders for freshman. Look into it!
