The exact role of the group probably depends on the firm you're talking about. At one BB, for example, the Strategy group works in a corporate development role helping to execute acquisitions/divestitures. These opportunities are usually identified by business heads who pass on much of the legwork to this group. Again, I think the amount of execution that happens in this group is very particular to a firm. Otherwise, the group helps to develop 'strategy' for the bank, meaning that they work with regional heads or business heads to build a business plan or identify potential targets to grow the bank. The group is not really client facing, rather there is considerable interaction with the management team of the bank (since this is who the strategy is eventually presented to for approval), potentially even at the highest level.

Hope this helps.
