What To Ask When The Inevitable "Any Questions?" Comes Up At Interview

I always find myself asking a question for the sake of it, which I hate doing and makes me seem generic and uninterested. E.g. "What is your favourite thing about X firm?", "What is the most exciting deal you've worked on?" etc. I don't actually care and that probably comes across.

Is it weird to ask something completely off topic? There was a scenario where the interviewer mentioned he was a big Man Utd fan - if I'd asked him about that and struck up a genuine conversation, would that make it seem as if I don't actually care about IB?

Any interviewers on here, what's the best question you've ever had?

Aren't you curious as to the role? The firm? The person interviewing you? I dunno man, ask them about their trajectory, fave/worst parts of the job etc. Ask them about the personal interests or individual things that come up during the interview, e.g., your United example. It's basically a way to spark conversation, demonstrate some depth as a human being and highlight your personality in a way. Trust me, after hearing responses to "walk me through a DCF" 10 times a day during cycle, everyone candidate just blurs into the next.

There really are no "wow" type questions but there are absolute dingers which make people look like tools. Asking an analyst/associate questions about the strategy of their firm, asking "where do you think rates will be" type shit.
