What to do as a new graduate trying to break into IB?

Hey, so I'm a recent graduate from a non-business background (Biomedical Sciences). I made the decision to switch over to business a little while ago and I am aiming to break into IB.

I graduated in April, but luckily, I was able to secure a pretty good internship as a fixed income analyst at a pension fund for the fall. The problem is what happens after the internship. Currently, I have nothing set-up for winter and next summer. Ideally, I want to continue getting internships to build-up my resumes/experiences, but literally all of the job postings for summer analyst/intern positions states "must be in final year of undergrad/masters" etc. So, although I think I would a great shot at getting in (3.9+ GPA, investment club, leadership activities, 1 directly relevant finance exp, other analytical experiences), I am not eligible to apply.

So, I thought of two ways to counter this:
1. Just apply anyways and see what happens - I don't know how strict all of these companies are on the "in undergrad final year" rule, if someone could shed some points on it that would be helpful?

  1. State that I will enter a masters in management/finance program in Fall 2018 - I am writing the GMAT and plan to enter a masters program next fall. Would this be perhaps a way to get around that rule?

Unless you have an offer from a uni already, I don't believe you can apply as an incoming MSF student, since that would likely raise some eyebrows. If I were you, I'd continue looking for internship opportunities & network on the side to build up the finance background required for your MSF program to actually be effective, and then have a shot at OCR at your school (assuming it's a target). Best of luck.

To infinity... and beyond!

What is the reason for companies only recruiting students in junior/penultimate year of studies? What is the difference between those students and students who have just recently graduated?

Mostly has to do with competition from other industries (mainly tech) to secure the best and brightest before graduation. Same reason why recruiting constantly moves earlier and earlier every year. Junior SA recruiting begins an entire year ahead of the actual internship, nowadays.

To infinity... and beyond!
