What to do - Coming out of college

Coming out of college didn't really know anything regarding what ibanking opportunities were good: deal experience, pe / vc exits things of that nature. True, I should blame myself for not having done the research although it seemed like resources were scarce at the time, I only decided to pursue banking about a week before full-time interviews, and most bankers straight up lie to you (this is fairly obvious at recruiting events I attend). But now that I'm relegated to being a first year at a westcoast bank/group that has been referred to as a "joke" on these boards I want to know what are things I could do to enhance my position for the post-banking opportunities and what I'm really missing out by not working at a "real" group? Do I still have a decent shot of going the mid-market pe or vc route? What are best steps to take at this point?

Side question: I've done little in the way of modeling thus far but, and apologies for potentially being very naive about this, it seems there's nothing terribly complicated about them (basic structure). Can someone please explain in depth what there is to a model beyond the basic flow of the financial statements (crazy debt schedules? other types of schedules? different methods of projecting certain line items beyond % of revenues? Don't mean to be antagonistic, really just curious and would like to learn. Thanks for the help.
