What to expect this summer? Advice?

I am currently a freshman and recently obtained an internship within a financial derivatives department similar to a prop derivatives trading desk at a firm in China. What I was told is that this department does some data analysis, quantitative modeling, testing and executing trading strategies- not too sure what an intern would do though.

Two questions I hope someone can answer:

1) Will this financial experience help me when I try to look for IB gigs for the summers after sophomore and junior year because I at least did something financial wise after my freshman year... or is this trading-type experience be totally irrelevant and not help at all?

2) Are there any things that I can proactively do and look for in a trading-type gig that are also relevant to banking?

Thanks in advance.

u're a freshman, and u managed to get something very analytical and finance related... that's more than enough for your to leverage that experience to source for a IB gig nxt summer... but be sure to write it well on ur resume though... most of us (me in particular) only managed PWM internships during my freshman yr... it's definitely relevant, don't worry...

learn learn and learn during this internship, build contacts actively and ask for a glowing recommendation @ the end of it all...

why don't u just try to enjoy ur experience, have fun, see if finance is for you. ur only a freshman, shouldn't worry about IB gigs so early.

I know- I will try to enjoy my experience, and even hopefully I will get a chance to travel around a bit too. But when it comes what specific things I should be looking out for, I'm not that knowledgeable. All I want is to have fund, but also make the most out of the experience. For now, I need to know if there is anything I should take advantage of during the internship that I might otherwise not get a chance to learn about?

Thanks
