what to expect with recruiter phone screening? IB analyst full-time role, London

done a few IBD internships, now looking at full-time roles. never done one of these phone screenings before, so just want to know what to expect; it's an external linkedin recruiter, don't have bank details yet. 30 min phone call.

is it mainly just CV-based/motivational/maybe some light competency/technicals/commercial awareness? just figuring out if i need any extensive prep beyond common sense things an aspiring analyst should already know. cheers.

For a recruiter phone screening, especially for an IB analyst full-time role, here's what you can expect based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. CV-Based Questions: Recruiters will likely focus on your resume to understand your background, internships, and relevant experience. Be prepared to walk them through your CV concisely, highlighting your IBD internships and any standout achievements.

  2. Motivational Questions: Expect questions like "Why investment banking?" or "Why are you interested in this role?" They want to gauge your enthusiasm and commitment to the industry.

  3. Competency Questions: These might include light behavioral questions to assess your soft skills, such as teamwork, problem-solving, or handling pressure. Examples could be "Tell me about a time you worked in a team" or "How do you handle tight deadlines?"

  4. Light Technicals/Commercial Awareness: While external recruiters may not dive deep into technicals, they might test your basic understanding of the industry. For example, they could ask about recent market trends, deals you've followed, or your understanding of valuation methods. Keep your answers simple and clear.

  5. Logistics and Fit: They may ask about your availability, location preferences, and visa/work authorization (especially as you're targeting London). This is also their chance to assess if you're a good cultural fit for the role.

Preparation Tips:

  • Know Your CV Inside Out: Be ready to explain every line on your resume, especially your IBD internships.
  • Polish Your Story: Have a clear and compelling narrative about why you're pursuing IB and what makes you a strong candidate.
  • Brush Up on Basics: While extensive technical prep isn't necessary, ensure you're comfortable with fundamental concepts like valuation methods (DCF, comps, etc.) and recent market news.
  • Practice Behavioral Answers: Prepare a few STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) examples for common competency questions.
  • Stay Professional: Treat this as a formal interview—be punctual, articulate, and professional throughout the call.

No need for extensive prep beyond these basics, but make sure you're confident and ready to articulate your experience and motivations clearly. Good luck!

external recruiter screens are a different animal from bank interviews - they're not grading you, they're deciding if you're easy to place. no technicals, they couldn't score them anyway. it's cv walkthrough, why ib, right to work, comp expectations, notice period.

the one thing worth prepping is a tight 60 second story they can repeat to a bank. recruiters basically pitch you onward, so hand them clean ammunition - what you've done, what you want, why you'd say yes.
