What tools and software needed for research and how to write the research

I have done research in the past but are there any tool & software we need to publish our research. What do researchers use and is there a way to do the research that is standard to understand. I always see these research with cool graphs and information that is easy to follow.

Example is research company like IBIS have great research and the graphic is good and the information is great. What are they doing to create those research and information.

I could be wrong but when they create tables and graphs it look like they are not using excel and the graphic on those table and graphs are high quality.
