I don’t think anyone truly laterals, meaning goes from JPM lev fin to BofA lev fin. There’s always some deeper reason, like comp or slightly different group, or you know your gonna get fired.
As noted above I think people rarely make a true lateral move to an equivalent group doing the same thing. A few possible reasons for lateraling that come to mind: moving to a group w better deal flow, moving to a diff product/coverage group, going from a boutique to a BB or vice versa, adverse events at your firm made you want to move.
Agree with this, you need to have a good reason. Coverage, bank size, deal flow, WLB to pay ratio, transaction focus, location are the main ones. There is so much opportunity cost lost in that it takes a long time to learn any new firm's processes / build trust with your team - an analyst has to have a pretty good reason.
To those of you who have “leveled up” how did it work out for you? I’m at a firm with a decent-ish WLB, they pay street and my experience (resume) is pretty good and I like the people I work with. That being said a lot of lateral opportunities have presented themselves at higher ranked banks, but I’ve balked at them. Ignore title, I work in investment banking division.
I think lateral moves are great if you are looking to a) change industry group (eg. from Industrials to consumer); b) change location (SF to NY or even from a different country to the US); or c) you like the job and industry but absolutely despise your team. Think the first 2 are very valid reasons, while the latter may not guarantee your new team will be better…
