I like your train of thought, but your premise lies on a logical fallacy. America is the only country that has never had a church run government. I know there are some who would disagree, but I am looking at it from a broad based historical perspective. As a result, I don't think we can accurate compare the two situations, as the only places that have "church-states" today don't exactly have modern banking models that can be accurately classified as retail or investment.
Breaking up retail and investment banks really isn't that complicated. I think it's more of a populist gesture, as the world is a far different place from the original Glass-Steagall era.
So to answer your question, let me ask one of my own: Is the seperation of retail and investment banks really as profound a gesture in today's day and age, as the separation of church and state was in the time of the framers?
Retail and Investment banks. The Christian right wing will fight this to the death. (I mean no bias here I try to be objective with politics).

The Christian Right is a powerful political force, and they basically would do anything to keep God in government. I personally believe they would even compromise on good economic policies in order to keep God in government.
Of course, DEMS have also done their fair share of mixing God with government (ie FDR)
Far left with their "God has to be removed from every single thing" is just as annoying as the radical right. I see no reason to remove God from the money or pledge of allegiance. This country was founded by religious men and many (if not all or most) of this countries most important documents have religious overtones or are rooted in a religious history/mindset.
Side note, this country is all about respecting religious beliefs, being tolerant of other peoples point of view, etc. How is saying "in god we trust" or having that phrase on our currency or calling it a fucking Christmas tree a big deal? Why oh why has America become a nation of pussies whose feelings get hurt all the god damn time! I am not talking about government sponsored religion, but please, lets get real.
Same thing with sex education. Why is it wrong to teach young adults about STD's and safe(r) sex methods. School is not encouraging sex, just simply showing the options, etc. This abstinence shit is moronic and if you want your kid to be in the dark about life then just keep him home. He will find out about sex when he has herpes because you wouldn't let him know what a condom is.
You know the God part was added to currency and the pledge in the 50's because of the far right, yeah? It's not some historical piece of America, it's just some stuff that we added in the height of the red scare.
All great points Tone. I will take the conspiracy theory angle. The "homosexualization of the American male as means of a quicker arrival at the ultimate goal of population control".
The other side of the coin is my Magnum Opus: "we have had a free ride since 1945 (one of only 3 large countries to avoid the carnage of WW1+2), now that the rest of the world is competing and we're dealing with smarter, hungrier, tougher competition our elites are trying to shut down competition for their own slots at home by making intelligence...inappropriate and unrewarding".
