What's the difference to you?

For those with tunnel vision on working for cream-of-the-crop PE/HF:

What drives you to this track, as opposed to a mid-sized HF or middle-market PE shop? Or corporate finance or corporate development?

The money is trivial--personal income has diminishing returns (i.e. is $5mil of income that much more satisfying than $1mil? $50mil than $5mil?). The 80 hour work weeks, though, only get physically and emotionally more taxing as you get older and have a family.

I'd love to hear what makes this track so sought-after.
