What's your overall opinion on female bankers?
I've been interested in a career in banking for a while now. Last week I was at an event in London about students who wanted to be bankers. At the event there was 5 girls and then 60 men. ???
I didn't particularly mind, I quite enjoyed the atmosphere (and the attention). But it does cause me to have concern about actually working in the profession. In my research I discovered most of the news on female bankers is all negative. I'm just worried about starting off with a bad reputation. For example, guys being afraid of me and treating me differently because of negative attention in the media (things like metoo etc). Because I don't want to be seen as man, but I don't want to be seen as a b-tch either.
Yeah so any advice on how what to do? And what you think of your female co workers?
Goldman Sachs aims for a 50/50 gender ratio in new analyst classes, even though most applicants are male. Most banks have similar gender diversity initiatives. If anything you are at an advantage.
GS doesn't have anything close to a 50/50 gender split in their analyst classes.
My bank this summer had 45%~ females in IBD, heard about the same in S&T/other divisions.
OP to your point:
1) females in banking are generally attractive from my observations - idk why, surely because of the driven profiles that banking attracts and usually people are quite sporty
2) set yourself some rules - don't be flirty with people at work, there are plenty more people to date outside your floor/bank.
3) dress conservatively - no super tight dresses/pants, super short skirts or tops making your chest too visible - will avoid both comments and looks from the boiz
4) benefit from females initiatives and make the most of them
5) I went for a team with more females as the atmosphere was more balanced and less male driven even as a guy, sure some teams will be more male heavy (FX trading, industrials in IBD) so if you can navigate and understand team dynamics you will be fine
6) one of the girl in my team is clearly the smartest analyst, but in some other teams you wonder how girls got there. As long as you are qualified enough you’ll be treated fairly. I think gents just hate women that took a spot of a more intelligent/qualified candidate because of their gender. So make sure you are not slacking behing your male counterparts
They have publicly admitted that they aim for 50/50 split, this doesn’t mean an equal split is guaranteed, it just means that underrepresented candidates are given preference during recruitment to help achieve an equal split.

I worked with good ones and terrible ones, the same thing as when it comes to guys I suppose.
The most important thing is just to make sure you are a part of the team and don’t shy away from going for a drink with the team or a dinner. That’s a super quick way to feel alienated as people will just stop inviting you out if you decline too many times.
It might be weird if you are for example the only girl (unlikely), but you’ll just have to do your best to make sure you integrate well as that is super important for your emotional health.
I normally dont mind them but one tried to up sell me on premium checks with puppy graphics on the background. I mean, just give me my cash and my free grape sucker.
Lol you're at an advantage if anything. Banks really do want to increase their gender ratio, there are diversity events and other resources that you can use if you're serious about banking.
I don't think its fair to generalize about an entire gender in the profession, there are bitches in finance, and there are the sweetest people you'll meet, and that goes for men and women. Do your own thing and things will pan out. don't rule out an entire profession because of a few bad articles

Can only speak for myself but I couldn’t care less about your gender as long as you consistently do good work and play well with the team.
it’s weird to have an across the board view on “female bankers.” i’m not inclined to dignify the question with a serious response tbh.
Gender blind--only care about competency, quality of work and fit with group.
To crack the truth, female bankers are fine as long as they perform better than the other candidate (be it male or female). Generally speaking, this is not the case and sometimes males are a collateral damage of it. This is a hugely controversial thing to say but screw it.

I’ve worked with lots of outstanding and incompetent men and women. not a statistically significant sample tho. I feel like broad generalizations usually say more about the speaker’s ability to pass a stats/formal logic class than anything else
huge advantage for females right now... for example our div team just hired all females this summer
