When to lock in housing for SA stint?

Working in midtown next summer, when is the best time to lock in a place to stay? I'm thinking just finding an Airbnb and reserving it in April-May, but I've seen posts on here where it seems like people already have things in place. Just don't want to get in a situation where I get fucked by a cancellation fee if I need to switch arrangements

You should start looking March/April. If you're in a big city, I recommend giving Craigslist a shot. Airbnb can be quite expensive and there are a lot of hidden gems on Craigslist. For example, I was either going to pay $2,400 for the lowest price Airbnb in midtown or get a $1300 studio off Craigslist. Can Craigslist be a little shady? Yeah, but it's all about vetting the landlords and the properties beforehand. You can end up saving a lot of money as well.
