When to speak on conference call - Investment Banking Off-Cycle (ECM Group)

Dear all,

I started as an ECM off-cycle analyst in January at a top-European IB. I have already done many slides, worked on equity story and valuation topics and I assist VPs on 80% of client meetings (IPOs, equity PP, equity-linked, capital raise etc).

However, many conference calls take place on a regular basis and I feel like s*** not talking. What's your point of view? As an intern, should I participate or s*** the f*** up? Most of my work is used by seniors and they are so experienced pitching it..

Thank you guys.

You should STFU unless you're asked to speak or actually have a good question that would be of interest to everybody on the call. Nobody called in to listen to the intern.

I don't know... Yeah. Almost definitely yes.

If you ask stupid questions, and say stupid things, you will be remembered as "that guy". No matter how hard you work, you'll be remembered as the intern that says stupid stuff. If you have a good relationship with the MD/Associate, try picking their brain and seeing what could be said about a slide, give your view of the pitch to the MD and see what they have to say about it.

I also recommend writing down questions that are asked and over time, you'll have an idea of what people ask for during a call, and how a question is answered.
