Why IB? (Non-interview)
Curious to why, in general, people pursue IB. Over asked question for sure, but is it seriously a mixture of high total comp (except UBS), career flexibility and stability? What about ambition/vision? If one had very high levels of ambition - like say wanting to join the billionaires club for example - could IB be an integral part of that path?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, people pursue investment banking (IB) for a variety of reasons, and while high compensation, career flexibility, and stability are significant factors, there are deeper motivations tied to ambition and vision:
High Compensation: The allure of six-figure salaries right out of college is undeniably a major draw. This financial reward is often seen as a reflection of the demanding nature of the job and the value IB professionals bring to businesses.
Career Flexibility: Investment banking provides a strong foundation in technical and professional skills, making it a launchpad for various high-profile careers, including private equity, hedge funds, corporate development, and even entrepreneurship.
Ambition and Vision: For those with high levels of ambition, IB can indeed be an integral part of the path to significant wealth or influence. The profession offers exposure to high-stakes deals, networking opportunities with influential clients, and a chance to develop a deep understanding of financial markets and corporate strategy. These experiences can be leveraged to build wealth, start businesses, or transition into leadership roles.
Fast-Paced, Competitive Environment: Many are drawn to the intense, high-pressure environment of IB, which attracts driven, smart, and motivated individuals. Excelling in such an environment can be fulfilling for those who thrive on challenges and competition.
Skill Development: The sharp learning curve in IB allows individuals to quickly develop analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills. These skills are not only valuable in banking but also transferable to other industries.
Impact and Purpose: Some view IB as a way to make a positive impact by helping companies raise capital, improve their financial strategies, and achieve growth. This perspective aligns with the idea of contributing to the broader economy.
While IB can be a stepping stone for those with aspirations of joining the "billionaires club," it is important to note that achieving such levels of wealth often requires leveraging the skills, network, and capital gained in IB to pursue entrepreneurial ventures or investments.

Moolah.
Specifically, risk-adjusted lifetime moolah. IB won’t make you a billionaire, basically only startups give that opportunity. But, if you want a smooth shot at a 7-figure NW at a reasonable age then this is it.
Because it is hard. Because others can’t. Getting in and staying in prove your self worth. People stay in banking because they are either addicted to cortisol or have OCD, and I am both.
So I can feel cool
