Why Investment Banking on the west coast/ LA

I am looking to move from NYC to LA after living in NYC for the past decade. I am looking for a fresh start after exiting an M&A group at a BB. I received a FT second-year analyst offer from a well known MM firm that focuses on Greentech and Infrastructure but had ultimately turned down the offer as I did not see SF as a good fit for myself.

With that being said, I am pursuing opportunities in LA currently and would like to know what is the attractive trends/opportunities for pursuing a career out here? I noticed a lot of respected names are out here but  also have noticed quite a few private credit firms sit out here as well. I am wondering what makes a career in IB/PC/CorpDev/ Strategy on the west coast so rewarding for a career? What would you recommend doing for sourcing opportunities?

Any insight, advice, or direction would be greatly appreciated!

Pursuing a career in Investment Banking (IB), Private Credit (PC), Corporate Development (CorpDev), or Strategy on the West Coast, particularly in Los Angeles (LA), offers a unique set of opportunities and trends that differentiate it from other regions like New York City (NYC). Here's what makes the West Coast, and LA specifically, an attractive place for a career in these fields:

  1. Industry Focus: LA and the broader West Coast region have a strong focus on certain industries such as Technology, Media, Entertainment, Greentech, and Infrastructure. This specialization offers unique opportunities to work with innovative companies and startups, as well as with established industry leaders.

  2. Lifestyle and Work-Life Balance: Generally, the West Coast is known for a more relaxed lifestyle compared to the East Coast. This can translate into a slightly better work-life balance, even in demanding fields like IB, although this can vary by firm and specific job role.

  3. Networking and Ecosystem: The West Coast has a vibrant ecosystem of professionals in finance, technology, and entertainment. This provides ample networking opportunities and the chance to build relationships with key industry players. The presence of top-tier universities and professional events also facilitates networking.

  4. Private Credit and Alternative Investments: LA has become a hub for private credit firms and other alternative investment firms. This growth is driven by the region's robust economic activities and the presence of high-growth companies seeking alternative financing solutions.

  5. Corporate Development and Strategy Opportunities: Many corporations headquartered on the West Coast offer roles in corporate development and strategy, leveraging the region's innovative culture. These roles often involve working on strategic partnerships, mergers and acquisitions, and long-term planning, providing a dynamic career path.

Sourcing Opportunities: - Networking: Leverage alumni networks, professional associations, and industry events to connect with professionals in your target field. The West Coast has a strong culture of networking, and personal connections can often lead to job opportunities. - Recruitment Firms: Consider working with recruitment firms that specialize in finance and investment banking. They can provide insights into the market and help identify opportunities that match your skills and interests. - Online Platforms: Utilize platforms like LinkedIn and Wall Street Oasis to identify and apply for openings. Engaging in relevant discussions and forums can also increase your visibility to potential employers. - Direct Applications: Identify firms that align with your career goals and apply directly through their websites. Tailor your application to highlight your relevant experience and interest in the West Coast market.

In summary, pursuing a career in IB, PC, CorpDev, or Strategy on the West Coast offers a blend of industry specialization, a supportive ecosystem, and lifestyle benefits.
