Why is investment banking so highly regarded and competitive?

investment banking is pretty much a client facing sales job.  The type of people who typically go in to it (overachievers from ivy league) and sales people are two distinct groups with little overlap.

there is literally 0 investing involved with investment banking. its 100% selling.

most entry level bankers spend all their time making powerpoint and excel slides.

Do they bring in seperate people to do the selling? I am surprised they promote the people making slides to eventually originate the deals.  I would think a private banker, someone in PWM, although much less smart, would be better at originating deals since they know how to mingle with the rich
