Working in FoFs, want to switch interally to IBD - please help!

I've tried to find threads on this site for similar situations and advice and cannot find anything helpful. For context, I work at a BB in FoFs investing (as a graduate) and want to switch across. 

I assume first steps would be to meet VP's in the team for a coffee to get a feel for cultural fit. When would I begin pitching myself for the switch?

I've had advice saying I should go to HR with my desire to switch but to me this doesn't feel like a good idea.
