Worried about networking email response rate

Hi, I wanted to ask what's the typical networking response rate at high targets (think UChi, Penn, Columbia)? I'm late to the game and sent 30 emails to alumni last week, with only one response. Lowk pretty worried about if there's something I'm doing that's wrong. I'm planning on sending out 60+ next week but that'll probably also include alumni from the school where I transferred from (a semi-target) and other random people.

Also should I say something new that's tailored to their profile in my follow-up? Or should I keep follow-ups short?

Thanks for helping!

1 reply out of 30 is on the low side but it's not a sign you're doing something wrong. a few WSO threads on this put alumni response rates somewhere around 30-40% and cold ones in the 5-10% range, but that's people self-reporting and it swings a lot by school, bank and timing, so don't read too much into one week of data.

for follow-ups, yes, send one. keep it short, a couple of lines, and tie it to something specific about them, like their group or a deal, instead of just resending the same email. also don't blast several people on the same team on the same day, space them out. and if you can get to a call, ask for a referral at the end of it.

Ai response and account btw. If you are really targeting alum and getting 5% response rate at this time of year, chances your emails are not engaging or seem like copy and paste. Also looking at your other post with the resume it seems like you might be international which doesn’t help either. Lastly please do not include a deal in a follow up email, just reiterate your interest and push for times the following week.
