Worst Groups at GS vs. JPM

Title says it all. Post horrendous experiences, groups, roles and locations. Details brothers we need details!

I’ll start - worst location of GS is headquarters. Worst groups idk … according to the media … all are going downhill under BJ D Sol.

Pls expand. I’m from GS like the OP and things look bad for us because the partners aren’t getting along. Some of our groups are pre-chill and easy tho. I always thought JPM would be more meritocratic than us because they seem less prestige driven. Do you think Callahan got her role because shes smart or did as you said? Masters left. Ik JPM drinks the diversity kool-aid more than us or does a better job covering their a**.

No one. I don’t find IB to be very difficult but I had a markedly different childhood than most Americans as I went to English boarding school.

JPM Energy Group in Houston is awful. Do not recommend. Sweaty beyond belief, and are leaning on their CB to actually get mandates because their standalone platform is garbage. CB leads a fair amount of the private's RBL facility and literally write into the agreements that the private will use them for their exit because the IB can't win the pitch on their own merit.

They're all sweaty, but less so when they have their own deal flow. I think GS Houston has been co-manager of a couple of larger corporate deals, but have honestly not seen them staffed at all on any upstream A&D deal in years. They may have pivoted away from traditional natural resources, but you would've thought with the run up in prices they would've re-entered but have not seen anything.

Ok I think there are some generational differences when using the terms toxic and political. I agree that all firms are political including GS as well. What I was trying to understand was I guess more internal company dynamics. At GS, I agree that superiors can be rude AF but they’re gone soon enough because our compensation has a component of other people’s opinions — including the juniors under us. Headquarters is the worst GS branch because it’s in NY which has a love/hate vibe depending on who you ask. But toxic is limited to very specific factors. If I ask a junior to complete a task for me at 7 pm and ask them to complete it for by 10 am the next day am I being the a**h*** or are they bad at managing their time? Potato v. Potatoe I guess. I always thought that since JPM didn’t have the “we’re GS and we only hire from the most prestigious universities” statements at orientation, that maybe their compensation was more based on who you actually are vs. at GS where the ppl around you affect your compensation and ability to stay in the firm. Otherwise you’ll be terminated in 2-3 years guaranteed.
